The People: Wall-E
What does the future hold for mankind? The way our country and civilization is going, the humans from Wall-E could be an accurate portrayal. The obese factor – check. The rise of the fast food industry combined with our over indulgence culture resulted in an overweight nation. Millions of dollars have been made on quick-fix solutions, as well as spent to spread awareness. Think Michelle Obama’s fitness campaign. However, nothing seems to be stopping the diabetic train. Technology in front of our face – check. With the advent of smart phones, there is never a moment where we are away from technology. The Society – The Social Network
Who could have imagined that after only seven years of existence, Facebook would have a movie made about it. Let’s take a look at some stats. As of Jan 12, Facebook has over 800 million users and half are logged on any given day. In just under a year, it has grown by over 200 million users and it has a implied value of 15 billion dollars. Now let’s take a look at some of the social factors. About 48% of American users find out about news from Facebook, over 750 million photos uploaded over New Years weekend alone, and 57% of people talk online more than in real life. So what does this all mean? Facebook is not only a big part of our culture; it will be a big part of our future. With so many Facebook users, combined with the fact that it owns terabytes of users’ information, we are headed to a hazy future.
The Government – The Adjustment Bureau
One of the underlying theme of the movies is the idea that government or an organization is set up to control people’s lives to make sure everything goes according to plan. Is there of a difference of what is happening with our government now? In an article by USA Today, after the 9/11 attacks, the Bush Administration started to keep track of our phones calls. Additionally, Bush authorized the NSA to eavesdrop on international calls and emails. This occurred over ten years ago. Today, there is SOPA and the megaupload issue. Just like land was privatized after every conquest, could the future of the internet be privatized as well? The only thing that is certain is that the government will increase their role limiting our freedom.
